Ambulance Envelope, Prestwick, 1954

  • Digital Collection

2002-039-134

This ambulance envelope was used to carry the remains of a postal item to its Panama Canal Zone destination following the crash of the B.O.A.C. Boeing Stratocruiser G-ALSA at Prestwick during an attempt to land. This cover illustrates the three-line boxed cachet in violet most commonly applied to the mail: SALVAGED MAIL / AIRCRAFT CRASH / PRESTWICK 25-12-54.  The delay to the mail resulted in this envelope being readdressed to a number of addresses in San Francisco in a search for the whereabouts of a passenger whose ship had left the Canal Zone before this envelope arrived.
